Things To Do in (and Around) Chipping Campden

Here is just a small sample of some of the things you can do when visiting Chipping Campden and the surrounding Gloucester and Warwickshire area.

Blockley Decorative and Fine Arts Society

Supporting Young Arts

Historically, much of this support has been given to primary schools and by working with teachers and museums to sponsor workshops and projects of various kinds.

Now the Society would like to support older pupils and is now offering 10 free places to A Level Art pupils to join any of their monthly lectures.

The Society’s programme for the next 6 months is wide ranging and exciting and covers diverse subjects ranging from Darwin to Venetian Glass. The lectures will be given by speakers known for their very high level of specialist knowledge and also enthusiasm for their subject.

The lectures will take place at St George’s Hall, Blockley and start promptly at 2.45pm and last for an hour. The topics for the next six months are:

7 December     Darwin and the Beagle
15 February     Early Flemish Painting and the discovery of oils
15 March     Isafan and Persepolis
19 April     Venetian Glass: the sublime to the ridiculous
17 May     Gustave Caillebotte
21 June     London’s Country Houses

If you would like to book a place, do please contact Kyrstyna Allen on 01789 740243.

Helios Exhibition

Fisherman at Bucks Mill by John LimbreyA short drive from the lovely village of Broadway on the Cheltenham road a turn to the right, signed Aston Somerville, will take you to Little Buckland Gallery where you will be rewarded by the annual exhibition of exciting and colourful work by the artists of the Helios group,

Malcolm earlier this year had a very successful sell out show in the Westcroft Gallery in Kingsand, Cornwall and it is Malcolm who has designed the superbly original publicity material for this exhibition.

Lacoste by Suzanne JonesJill Jeffrey won the Sarah Samuel Fine Art prize in the Pastel Society's Exhibition in 2008 and Suzanne Jones won second prize in the Tabernacle competition organized by the Museum of Modern Art Wales, and Gill Holloway has had a major retrospective exhibition, her 15th one man show.

For nine years Helios exhibited in Upper Swell Gallery and have now chosen this attractive new gallery to display their work. Over one hundred works will be on show in a variety of media and subject matter, plus ceramics all for sale.

In The Mood For Art?

ANNUAL SUMMER EXHIBITION 2009
SATURDAY AUGUST 1ST – SUNDAY AUGUST 9TH
St George’s Hall, Park Road, Blockley, Gloucestershire, GL56 9BY
10.00am – 5.30pm
ADMISSION FREE – AMPLE PARKING

Are you in the mood for something rather special? Well, what about combining a visit to a relatively unknown village, with a visit to Blockley Art Society’s annual exhibition? You may be surprised by both! Blockley is a hidden gem; deep in one of the UK’s largest areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but located conveniently close to the towns of Chipping Campden, Moreton in Marsh, Stow on the Wold, and Broadway. A wonderfully picturesque village, with old silk mills, wisteria clad stone cottages, 18th century terraces, stunning views, mill ponds, a village shop, two pubs, and the lovely church of St Peter and St Paul.

Blockley Art Society is a thriving association of artists, whose annual exhibition attracts not only locals, but also many from further a field, especially art lovers seeking original art at affordable prices. The standard of work is unusually high. Last year one of the exhibits, a landscape by David Birch went on to win first prize at The Royal Watercolour Society in London.

Another regular exhibitor is Jill Jeffrey, a full member of the Pastel Society and exhibits regularly at The Mall in London. During the last year, several other members have had their work accepted for prestigious open exhibitions including: The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours at The Mall, London, The Royal West of England Academy in Bristol, and The Royal Watercolour Society at Bankside.

CUT 2 ON FOLD – Visual Art and Dance Event

The Studio-Seven group of textile designers is becoming known for presenting combined arts events . In 2007 they had tremendous success with Textiles in Performance at Woodchester Mansion and at the Fresh Air Sculpture Show in Quenington Old Rectory Garden.

This year they are staging CUT 2 ON FOLD in which garments, created in a recent interactive installation for Stroud International Textile Festival, are the springboard for a dynamic visual art / dance event.

Professional dancers and musicians are devising new choreography and composing new music in collaboration with the Studio-Seven designers to bring the world of CUT 2 ON FOLD alive.
There will be two performances in July at Quenington Old Rectory Garden and Hidcote Manor Gardens. There will be a final performance in September at the scene of 2007's triumph at Woodchester Mansion.

The performance at Hidcote on Saturday 11th July at 7pm will round off HIDCOTE UNLOCKED, a week long festival the culmination of a creative projects involving local schools and guest artists.
